How important are doors? Well, that seems like a stupid question, but really think about it for sometime. Doors are more necessary than we think and we use them more often than we can reckon. To define a door, it is not just an entry or exit to a place. Actually it is defined as a hinged obstacle that is used to cover the opening that is used as a way in or an exit. The history of doors is untraceable as it probably goes back to man’s first stealing attempt. We have seen the designs and styles of doors develop a lot in front of our own eyes. The main reason of this evolution has always been security. Primitive man covered their cave doors with rocks to keep the animals away. He then learned the art of lumber works,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and wood was used to make hard yet lighter doors. After that, you most likely saw how industrialization promoted the custom of metals in steel buildings or roll up door. Metal proved to be even more safe with a less thick mass than wood.
Despite the uses of one material over another,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we still see all of them being used. Many varieties of doors now come from a variety of designs. These designs can either be for the sake of beauty or for practicality and purpose. Some designs are also,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], specific to a specific civilization or architectural style. Let’s have a glance through changing doors throughout the time and cultures.
The slab doors: These are the most regular types of door used around the houses and apartments. They commonly have a handle or a knob at one part. These doors are hinged from the other side so that they can swing open when a handle or knob is turned. They are made of a slab of wood that can be either flat or engraved.
French Doors: Since it is French, there has to be some type of ‘beauty’ constituent about it. This loveliness is created by many little glass windows in the door. These windows are also known as ‘lights’. A French door can have a multiple numbers of lights.
Dutch doors: Ever come across a door which is horizontally distributed in two panels? These are Dutch doors. These types of doors are commonly used in stables to easily feed the horses without letting them completely free.
Saloon Doors: This is the place the cowboy makes his dramatic entrance. These are lightweight panels that can go mechanically back to their original place and can be pushed from any side to swing open and differ in length. The one which is just about shoulder to knee length is also called the Batwing door.
Folding doors: These kinds of doors have multiple panels which can be folded to open and needs a small amount of space than a swinging door will need in front of it.
Sliding door: These doors bring together the convenience of both folding and swinging doors. Yet they don’t really have panels like the folding door. Such a door is usually a single panel of glass or any other sheet. Plus it does not need much extra space in front of it. However, there has to be enough side space to slide the panel and totally open the doorway.
